About Director: Amitava Bhattacharya is a promising Bengali film maker. Although just starting out in his career, Bhattacharya is already creating much interest amongst critics due to his film Raktokarobi which has travelled to many festivals.
Synopsis: Amitava Bhattacharya’s Rakto Karobi is the contemporary adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore’s play by the same title. The central character of the film, Raja (Shantilal Mukherjee) is a renowned theatre personality and also a political leader. He decides to produce Tagore’s Rakto Karobi play for his next theatre production to channel his emotions and portray the clash between his own political & theatre persona. The play depicts the vanity and selfishness of a king who exploits and oppresses his subjects. A woman with strength of mind and heart, Nandini (Mumtaz Sorcar), however questions this repressive set up. The film is like a story within a story and portrays the complex characters of Tagore, Raja and Nandini with much precision..
